Floods and inundations, caused by incessant rain falling for 24 hours, are creating serious inconvenience in Milan and in much of Lombardy. And the forecasts do not bode well.

The Lambro was the first river to exceed its banks, overflowing first in some Milanese neighborhoods and then in Monza Park. “In Ponte Lambro – said the mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala – we have 170 people without electricity. We are also finding an emergency solution for tonight in our Cam, we are bringing cots”. In Rilke Street, fire brigade divers intervened to help a disabled woman who could not leave her house. The fallen trees also hampered public transport.

But the firefighters carried out hundreds of interventions throughout the province. In Masate (Milan) the red helmets evacuated a nursery school due to rising water levels. Also in the Milan area, children and adults were also saved in Bellinzago Lombardo thanks to a joint intervention by firefighters and carabinieri. And the bad weather in Milan has sparked political controversy against the Municipality.

The situation has also worsened hour by hour in Monza, where the park was closed due to the flooding of the Lambro river, cars in a car park were submerged in water and several nursery schools and schools were evacuated. The mayor of the Brianza capital, Paolo Pilotto, invited citizens not to use their cars. In Bernareggio (Monza), however, a retaining wall collapsed: as a precaution, the three families living in an adjacent building were evacuated.

Not just Lambro, though. The Seveso river also flooded late this afternoon. The lamination tank of the Municipality of Milan held up as long as it could. Then, once filled, the waters invaded the Niguarda neighborhood “This is because – said the Milanese councilor Marco Granelli – a tank alone is not enough, those of Senago, Lentate and Paderno-Varedo are also needed. We have to do all the tanks, which is why we tell the Lombardy Region that we must not waste a minute”.

Inconveniences and risks have affected a large part of Lombardy, also heavily affecting train circulation, in particular the Varese-Milan-Treviglio, Milan-Lecco and Novara-Milan-Pioltello lines. Landslides and flooding, particularly of underpasses, have been recorded in the Lodi area and the Varese area. In Bulciago, in the Lecco area, the Bevera torrent overflowed its banks and numerous sections of road were closed. The level of Lake Como is constantly growing.

The bad weather also caused disruption on the highways. In particular, there were 6 kilometers of queues on the A1 due to the closure of the Fiorenzuola exit due to flooding.

The A4 was closed between the Castegnato toll booths in the Brescia area and Cavenago (Monza), in the direction of Milan.
The alert will also continue tomorrow. According to forecasts, intense phenomena will continue to hit Piedmont and Lombardy and then slide towards Emilia, Veneto and much of the North-East. In the South, however, intense heat is expected with peaks of up to 35 degrees. Spring 2024, which resembles winter in the north and summer in the south, is splitting Italy in two, and risks turning into a nightmare.
