SYRACUSE, NY — The City of Syracuse wants you to participate in lifeguard training for the month of May and June.
The spring session for lifeguard certification starts on Wednesday, May 18 at Valley pool or Southwest pool.
The sessions run Wednesday, Fridays and Saturday for the next three weeks, with the weekday sessions from 4:30 pm to 8 pm and the Saturday session from 10:30 am to 5 pm The commissioner of Parks for Syracuse said they are looking for all ages to apply.
Any age for a lifeguard. I think this would be appealing as a summer job to the youth,” said Tony Williams. “Because you can be 15 [years-old] and be a lifeguard here. And we also train you. So I think for those reasons, it’s a great summer job for anyone 15 and up. Also, if—once you become a lifeguard here at the City of Syracuse, at Parks and Recreation, you always have the opportunity to come back year after year. So, that’s what a lot of our lifeguards do: they come back year after year, and I’ve noticed it’s kind of like a family, here at the Parks Department.
The Syracuse Parks department said you will need a swimsuit, towel and goggles for each session.
At the end of the class you will be certified in:
- Lifeguarding (Not waterfront)
- First Aid
- CPR for the professional rescuer
- Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
The courses have the following costs:
- Fees will be waived for City Residents who fulfill an employment contract for the upcoming summer season with a minimum of 20 hours per week.
- City Residents Registration Fee: $25
- Noncity Resident Registration Fee: $75
- Certification Fee: $80 for everyone and should be paid by check and brought the first day of class. Check made payable to Commissioner of Finance.
