«Israel wants the PA to manage the Rafah crossing»

Israel has asked that Abu Mazen’s Palestinian National Authority (PNA) manage the Rafah crossing in Gaza with Egypt. This is supported by the Axios website, which cites four different sources, as reported by the Jerusalem Post.

According to Axios, if this were the case, it would be the first time that Israel has involved the PA in matters relating to the war in Gaza. A position different from that supported so far by Israel which does not want the PNA’s involvement in the Strip.

Currently the crossing – which is under control of the IDF after the military operation launched in recent days – is closed and international organizations have called for its immediate reopening for humanitarian aid.

Meanwhile, Egypt is considering reducing, but not cutting, diplomatic relations with Israel. Sources in Cairo reported this to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), motivating the move with the growing divisions over the war in Gaza and Israeli control of the Gaza crossing with Egypt.

According to WSJ sources, one of the initiatives being studied is that of the withdrawal of the ambassador from Tel Aviv. “There are no plans at the moment to suspend ties or throw out Camp David,” another source said, referring to the agreements that led to the 1979 peace treaty. “But as long as Israeli forces remain at the Rafah crossing, the ‘Egypt – he added – will not send a single truck to Rafah.”
