A wealth that is not only spiritual, but also artistic and architectural, which deserves to be protected and preserved. We talk about the Cremona CathedralWhere some new restoration works have begun in recent weeks.
A first intervention concerns the seventeenth-century portal of the prothyrum of the larch wood façade and the two nineteenth-century fir wood doors which constitute the entrance to the right and left side naves. The works were entrusted to restorer Mauro Spinelli, from Bagnolo Cremasco, specialized in interventions on historical wooden assets. The restoration operation, authorized by the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Cremona, Mantua and Lodi, and which follows that of 2013, will subsequently continue on the door of the Baptistery and also on the two portals of the side facades of the Cathedralrespectively overlooking Largo Boccaccino and Piazza Sant’Antonio Maria Zaccaria.
«This is an extraordinary maintenance work, but planned by the Cathedral Council, which accepted the requests arriving from the management of theCultural Heritage Office – explains Don Gianluca Gaiardi, diocesan representative for ecclesiastical cultural heritage and religious buildings -. In the past only sporadic interventions had been carried out, so the need arose to permanently fix the doors.”
But thereand restoration activities also concern the facade works. An example of this is stone bas-relief under the portico of the facadea frieze of Genesis with original sin and the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the earthly paradisewhose cleaning and conservation work was recently entrusted to ConservArtLodi laboratory of Davide Cesari. These works are carried out thanks to contribution by Inner Wheel Cremonawhich will also provide for the publication of studies and insights into the artefact by the professor Giorgio Milanesiprofessor of medieval art history at the University of Parma.
«The bas-relief concerned is the only one that has never been restored – concludes Gaiardi –. The opportunity for the restoration comes thanks to Inner Wheel Cremona, which, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of its foundation, wanted to leave a symbolic work linked to the Cathedral of Cremona”.
