Viterbo – Tuscia is among the oldest territories in the entire region. 254 elderly people for every 100 young people. Second only to the province of Rieti which has 277. Followed by Frosinone with 220 elderly people for every 100 young people, Rome with 201 and Latina with 196. Throughout the region, the average is 207. At a national level 215. The province of Viterbo surpasses these two figures of almost 50 and 40 points.
The old age index is the percentage ratio between the population aged 65 and over and the population aged 0-14 years.
Not only that, but if the birth rate and mortality rate are compared, the municipality of Tessennano, 281 inhabitants in total, risks even disappearing. The first, in fact, is equal to 0, the lowest in the province, the second is instead 31 deaths, the highest in Tuscia, per thousand inhabitants, which it doesn’t even have.
The data comes from Istat and concerns the population census updated to 2022.

The situation is also unchanged as regards the structural dependency index, i.e. the ratio between the non-active age population (0-14 years and over 64 years) and the active population (15-64 years). For Tuscia it is 62 non-active for every 100 active, second to Rieti where the index rises to 64. Then followed by Frosinone (60), Rome (59) and Latina (58). The regional and national averages stand at 59 and 60 respectively.
Going into the detail of the individual municipalities, the highest old age index is found in Latera with 622 elderly people for every 100 young people. In second place Proceno (589) and in third Farnese (425). In Viterbo the old age index is 201 elderly people for every 100 young people.
The structural dependence index sees Arlena di Castro in first place (80), Onano in second (79) and Civitella d’Agliano in third (76).
However, the situation changes radically if the old age and structural dependence indices are compared to the foreign population present in the province of Viterbo. Premise. The percentage of foreigners in Tuscia out of the total resident population is approximately 10%. 2 and a half points more than in 2021. In total, 30,624 foreigners. The second province of Lazio after Rome (12.1%). Following are Latina (9.6%), Rieti (9.1%) and Frosinone (5.1%). In Lazio the percentage stands at around 11%, at a national level it is 8.7%. The municipality with the highest percentage is Orte (19.7%), after which there are Monterosi (17.1%) and Arlena di Castro (14.6%). In Viterbo the percentage is 10%.
The old age index among foreigners residing in the province of Viterbo is 36 elderly people for every 100 young people, the structural dependency index is 27 non-active people out of 100 active people.

As for the first, in the province there were 5 births for every thousand residents. Among the lowest in Lazio, always after Rieti (5.6). One point less than Italy and almost one compared to Lazio. The municipality with the lowest birth rate is Tessennano (0), followed by Villa San Giovanni in Tuscia (1.7) and, tied, Onano and Calcata (2.2).
In terms of mortality, the province of Viterbo stands at around 13 deaths per thousand inhabitants. About two points more than the region and the country. The municipality with the highest rate is Tessennano (13), then Cellere (29) and, paired, Latera and Civitella d’Agliano (27).
