The luggage, the gun and the hijacked flights: what happened at Bologna airport

Chaos atBologna – Guglielmo Marconi airport, which has been closed for safety reasons. Numerous flights that should have landed in the Emilian airport have arrived in the last few minutes hijacked on other airports waiting to understand how the situation evolves. The reason would be a gun found in a passenger’s luggage. Flights from Brindisi, Monco, Brussels, Amsterdam, Stockholm and Seville were diverted. They were diverted to Bergamo, Venice and Pisa. However, other flights such as Vienna, Luxembourg, Alicante and Barcelona were cancelled. Inevitable repercussions also on departing flights, with all flights scheduled after 3pm being canceled or alternatively delayed.

In-depth checks carried out manually by airport experts made it possible to ascertain that the alarm, in reality, was the result of a mistake. According to what was reported by some investigative sources reported by Adnkronos, in fact, a new machine recently arrived at the airport would have created an alert as it seemed there was a silhouette of a gun in a suitcase. But probably no gun was in that baggage and now it will have to be ascertained whether it was a technical error or a human error. Internal investigations will now have to shed light on the reasons that led to the error. The consequences on European air traffic have been innumerable, as well as for passengers, forced to land at airports far from their destination or, worse, never to leave again.

Subsequently the airport was reopened but all the flights are accumulating considerable delays, with all the resulting inconveniences for departing and arriving passengers. The average flight delay exceeds an hour and there are possible knock-on effects on all flights of the day, with increasingly less distance between the scheduled time and the actual departure time. The new machinery appears to have been installed in recent days as part of the modernization works of the structure to facilitate travelers in security steps.

But something must have gone wrong this afternoon and it will be essential to quickly identify the problem, to avoid new alarms.
