THE SLOW FOOD DAY IS BACK IN ABRUZZO, “TRANSUMANTS FOR A DAY” IN ANTWERP WITH NUNZIO MARCELLI

The Slow Food Abruzzo network joins the great celebration of Slow Food Day, the day in which the territorial and regional entities belonging to the Slow Food network and the Italian Slow Food Communities organize events throughout the Peninsula; there are over 70 initiatives taking place simultaneously in all regions and 7 those organized by the Abruzzo network. Everything is ready for May 18th with numerous activities planned: meetings, walks, markets, workshops and tastings to reaffirm the great value and high quality of local food and the need for a good, fair and healthy relationship between women, men and nature .

“Transhumant for a day” is the proposal of Slow Food L’Aquila with the Bioagriturismo La Porta dei Parchi of Nunzio Marcelli located in Anversa degli Abruzzi. Marcelli is a shepherd, graduated in economics, and creator of “adopt a sheep”, the initiative that has gone around the world. On May 18th from 9.30am various activities will take place with the aim of making all the curious discover the home-produced delicacies and the secrets of bio-agritourism: the walk with the flock and the vertical tasting of the company’s raw milk cheeses combined with Slow Presidia Food, followed by lunch and the cheesemaking workshop. You can optionally watch the sheep being milked and at the end of the day you can take the cheese home and collect the Good Shepherd certificate. An unforgettable day in contact with nature.

In the Teramo area we start at 9am from the Ciccone di Bisenti farm for an original itinerary, proposed by Slow Food Terre Teramane together with the Sopraffino Consortium, dedicated to delving into the history of the town and tasting the food and wine excellences. Slow Food Chieti celebrates the olive biodiversity and quality extra virgin olive oils of Chieti. The appointment is at 5.30pm in Campo Torre Fieramosca in Chieti to walk under the centuries-old plants of Cucco guided by the producer Davide Iacovella. This is followed by a sensorial tasting of the Slow Food Presidium extra virgin olive oil and an aperitif under the olive trees to experiment with tastes and textures in combination with the company’s oils. Also available in a gluten free version in collaboration with Aic Abruzzo, it is accompanied by Fattoria Teatina wine. In Francavilla al Mare the local Slow Food network proposes Seppia Day, a day dedicated to the local seasonal cephalopod. At 12 on the beach in front of Via Aldo Moro 1, we await the return of a fisherman who practices traditional fishing methods with pots. After collecting the catch in the boxes, the Mecomilla a Mare restaurant hosts the cuttlefish cleaning and preparation workshop and the lunch based on traditional recipes.

In the Frentana area, the appointment with Slow Food Lanciano is at 9.30 at the Casetta Bianca farm. It starts with a guided walk from Palena towards Lettopalena to discover the orchids, followed by a visit to the dairy company and an aperitif based on goat’s cheeses paired with craft beers. In the afternoon, a visit to the Germplasm Bank, in the Maiella Park headquarters in Lama dei Peligni. In the province of Pescara, in Montesilvano, in via Marrone, Slow Food Pescara together with the association Becoming Active Citizens is organizing an exhibition-market of local and zero kilometer products. From 7.30am to 1.30pm it will be possible to shop and get to know the individual companies and the two promoting companies. From 4pm, four taste workshops will allow the older ones to understand the peculiarities of honey, wine and oil, and the younger ones to get their “hands on”. Slow Food Vestina meets in Penne in Corso Alessandrini where, from 4.30pm to 7.30pm, “Trame regenerative” takes place, a workshop dedicated to the processing of wool which transforms an individual activity into a collective process. The protagonist is the wool coming from the flocks of the producers of the Farindola Pecorino Slow Food Presidium, at the center of a recovery project carried out by the Collezione Nato Frascà association with the Pecunia association.

An opportunity to make known the projects and activities that the Chiocciola association carries out at a local level and to create a moment of sharing that involves everyone towards a common goal: «reactivate a dialogue with food that allows us to go out from the condition of consumers to become creators: of choices, of actions, of meanings – he states Barbara Nappini, president of Slow Food Italy -. Next May 18th we will celebrate our pride in being Slow Food. On farms, in allied restaurants and in the squares, the association demonstrates with activists who support and talk about good, clean and fair food. This year our primary commitment is dedicated to the introduction of nutrition education as compulsory teaching in schools of all levels. An objective to be pursued together, as a global food movement, to make food an instrument of awareness and pleasure. For those who believe in the right of everyone to a life of peace and beauty and to the food that nourishes it.” (gp)
