The Agropoli National Finals dream ends in the play-off for Carpegna Prosciutto under 17, defeated in Modena 66-76 against Allianz Derthona. Coach Mattia Costa’s team approached the match better, closing the basket on their opponents and going ahead 11-4 before closing the first quarter 20-14; the second quarter proceeds on balance, with the gap between the two teams remaining unchanged at +9, until Selvatici’s triple from behind midfield for +12 (42-30). Reginato (17 points) is inspired, but the Vuelle attack slowly shuts down, losing rhythm due to the zonal defense of the Piedmontese lions which cages the red and white attack and the gap decreases more and more until only +1 in the third fourth (54-53). Cornis and Stable Terry score four points on mid-range jumpers for 58-53, VL seems to have regained control of the match, but there the light goes out completely.
In just five minutes, Tortona went on a 16-0 run, dominating on the rebound and actually closing the game with Bellinaso’s triple from nine meters with 03’05” left. Vuelle breaks free from the line, but immediately gets back to -11 before Stable Terry’s three free throws for -8 with just 45 seconds left, too late now.
Thus ends the 2007-2008 season of the group, first place in the regional championship and second in the interregional group behind only Unahotels Reggio Emilia. To conclude the youth season only the under 15s remain, engaged in the Umbria interzone from 17 to 19 May.
