68-year-old dies, investigations underway

PAVIA – A 68-year-old man lost his life yesterday afternoon when he fell from the fourth floor of Tower A of the Dea, inside the San Matteo Polyclinic in Pavia. The dramatic event took place around 1pm, under the eyes of some people who were in the courtyard below, a few steps from the emergency room entrance.

The man, who was not hospitalized and had no relatives being treated at the facility, had no escape. Despite timely medical aid and immediate resuscitation, his condition was too serious to be saved.

The investigations, conducted by the flying squad of the Pavia Police Headquarters, lean towards the hypothesis of suicide. According to family members’ testimonies, the man was going through a difficult period characterized by severe depression.

The precise dynamics of the incident are yet to be clarified. The man would have reached the fourth floor of Tower A, which houses the General Medicine department, by taking the external stairs or coming directly from the department itself. Once on the balcony, he would have gone over the iron railing and would have thrown himself into the void.

Despite the presence of a scalpel net, which can be easily circumvented, to prevent an accidental fall, the police do not rule out the possibility that the man deliberately chose to climb over the fence.

The area was immediately cordoned off and seized to allow rescue and police investigations. Investigations continue to reconstruct the facts precisely and clarify the reasons for the tragic gesture.
