Olbia. Riccardo Orgolesu, a seventeen-year-old attending the fourth year of the Gramsci Classical High School, is the winner of the 2024 edition of Certamen for the best translation of texts from Greek, with a prize of one thousand euros. The competition, in which forty of the most deserving students from all the schools on the island participated, was held in Sassari last week at the Azuni high school.
After having participated in Herculaneum in April for the finals of the Italian Championships, Riccardo also managed to bring home this great result, with an absolute record, given the participation in the Certamen of students attending the fifth year and, consequently, more advantaged in terms of topics and authors studied in class. Orgolesu was awarded for best translation of a text by Isocrates on the forms of State and for a personal comment in the style of a short essay, written starting from the comparison of the translated passage with the political thought of other classical authors. The awards ceremony took place in the Segni room of the Faculty of Law of Sassari. Riccardo’s teachers, classmates and family were proud and supported him and celebrated this important milestone.
Riccardo Orgolesu is a boy with strong writing skills. Passionate about literature, despite his young age, he writes for an online newspaper and dreams of enrolling in the Faculty of Letters to become a teacher. For the Certamen he prepared mostly independently, but with the support of his Greek teacher, training in translating the styles of the various authors so as not to find himself unprepared for any passages not covered in class. And, as expected, he found himself faced with an author not yet studied in class. Riccardo says: “I had no difficulties regarding the author’s style. However, I had to be careful when rendering certain terms in order to preserve the meaning of those particular passages. Winning the award was a great satisfaction and I am thrilled by this achievement: he gave me confirmation that I am on the right path to do a good job.”
