The evocative registration ceremony for the Palio in Piazza San Magno
Legnano -The eight Contrade are now all officially registered with the Palio di Legnano 2024.
In a truly unique audience setting – around 2 thousand in attendance – on the afternoon of Saturday 13 May, with the usual background of the choirs of the Contradaioli, the inevitable roll of the drums, the sound of the clarions and with the splendid glance given by the colors of the Contradethe second and most important ritual ceremony took place, approaching the Palio on Sunday 26 May, the ceremony that recalls the ancient medieval knights: the Civil Investiture of the new Contrada Captains and the delivery by the Grand Priors of the letter of registration to the Palio in the hands of the Supreme Magistrate, which was followed the official presentation of the Contrada Regencies to the city.
Two Captains who received the new appointment, Domenico Gumina (Contrada San Bernardino) and Diego Tomalino (Contrada Legnarello).
This year the eight Regencies are made up as follows. Saint martin: Cristiana Moretti (San Martino), Davide Barone (Captain), Federica Canton (Castellana), Marida Cattaneo (Grand Lady), Daniele Cerana (Squire). Saint Ambrose: Ermenegildo Pizzo (Grand Prior), Mattia Landi (Captain), Giulia Restelli (Castellana), Rosanna Garavaglia (Grand Lady), Alessandro Ortica (Squire). Saint Dominic Andrea Morelli (Grand Prior), Alessandro Furlan (Captain), Valentina Rolla (Castellana), Laura Dalle Feste (Grand Lady), Lorenzo Manasseri (Squire). San Bernardino: Andrea Franco Colombo (Grand Prior), Domenico Gumina (Captain), Ilaria Bortignon (Castellana), Barbara Carolo (Grand Lady), Marco Mariano (Squire). The Flora: Pietro Colombo (Grand Prior), Vincenzo De Milato (Captain), Francesca Ponzelletti (Castellana), Fabiana Monticelli (Grand Lady), Giacomo Centonze (Squire). Legnarello: Alessandro Mengoli (Grand Prior), Diego Tomalino (Captain), Michela Sala (Castellana), Cristiana Re (Grand Lady), Luca Lavazza (Squire).
The mayor of Legnano and Supreme Magistrate of the Palio, Lorenzo Radicespoke to the hearts of the Contrada people, in a different May, in the year of the Centenary: “we are at the much desired May, the month that takes us to the Palio, to the Palio of the Centenary of Legnano Città”. “This – recalls the Mayor – it is a particular year, in which we all have the task of thinking about our identity and the future of our city. An identity that is always based on tradition, to keep the fire of the Palio alive, every day, bringing more and more people to know these traditions of ours and to make them live, so that more and more people become passionate and keep this fire alive”. The Mayor then expressed words of confidence in addressing the Palio di Legnano Foundation, which for some years has supported the College of Captains. “The Palio Foundation is helping us to take our Palio outside the city, to fuel our tradition with ever new energy.”
In every Manor it stays late, the “fever” rises as we wait for the Palio race. The next official ceremony will be the Vigil of the Cross next Friday in the Basilica of San Magno. Monday 20 May, the last Investiture of the Contrada, that of the Regency of San Bernardino.
