The civil society of Naples she found herself in Vanvitelli squarein the neighborhood Vomero, to ask for greater security. The demonstration, promoted by the Parents’ Network, was born following a violent brawl that broke out in this square last Friday.

«We demand the right to healthy growth – said the organizers – we are experiencing an emergency moment not only in Vomero, not only in Naples: it is an emergency that must be addressed at a national level. The situation is getting out of hand.”

In the square mainly women, mothers, but also children and teenagers. Among the signs displayed ‘Let’s shed light on safety’, ‘Let’s educate non-violence’, ‘Invest in the future if you invest in young people’, ‘A safe city is a living city’, ‘The future of society is built together’, ‘Without young people there is no future’. Parents claim the possibility that their children can go out without having to fear being victims of violence.

“Going out and going dancing at their age is a right – said a woman – and we parents don’t have to live with the worry of receiving a phone call telling us there’s been a fight.” The families remembered Francesco Pio Maiomone and Giovanbattista Cutolo, the two boys who last year, just a few months apart, were killed by minors while spending an evening with their friends. The demonstrators painted a white sign on their faces, a symbol of peace and non-violence, and turned on the torches of their cell phones “to shed light” on the emergency of youth violence. Also in the square were representatives of the L’Altra Napoli association who talked about the work that the association carries out with the children of the Sanità and Forcella districts to take them away from the streets and, for example, teach them to play a musical instrument. Representing the municipal administration, the Security Councilor, Antonio De Iesu.

He was saying that “it is a duty to be here” and explaining the investments that the Municipality has made to implement video surveillance, when he was interrupted because – explained one of the promoters – “this is a demonstration of parents, of families”, however, underlining that De Iesu “has always shown sensitivity and has received us in recent months”. The demonstrators highlighted that video surveillance is a tool that “comes later, when our children have already been beaten. We ask for the presence of police a sense of security”, say the former mayor of Naples Luigi de Magistris and the Lega MP Gianluca Cantalamessa.
