Turin – Angelo Martino, anti-degradation “hero” in the Milan Barrier, has died.

Farewell to Angelo Martino, well-known activist from the Barriera district of Milan and president of the Turin North-Barriera Committee of Milan, who died at the age of 82.

Martino was a fervent defender of legality and the fight against degradation in the neighbourhood, engaging in petitions, sit-ins, complaints and demonstrations against drug dealing, theft and illegal occupations.

Admitted to Gradenigo hospital for an incurable disease, his death was greeted with sorrow by the committee and the inhabitants. Founder of the citizens’ association in the 1990s, Martino organized anti-degradation walks and peaceful patrols to combat the phenomenon of drug dealing.

His commitment was also recognized by the police, with whom he maintained constant contact.

The latest battles of the anti-decay “hero” saw a rally under the Palazzo Civico last September to urge interventions against illegal occupations and drug dealing in various places in the neighborhood.

Martino also organized a public assembly the previous October, at the Marchesa Theatre, to solicit the intervention of the public administration, which led to the arrival of the Army at Barriera in Milan last January.

His passing leaves a void in the northern suburbs neighborhood and in the local civic movement, but his commitment and determination will remain an example for the community.
