Obesity, an endemic disease

In Alghero at the Catalunya hotel on Saturday 11 May the VIII Hot Topics in Hepato-Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy organized by the Aou of Sassari and sponsored by the University of Sassari

Sassari 10 May 2024 – Technological innovation in the treatment of pathologies in the field of hepato-gastroenterology represents a continuous challenge for multiple medical-surgical specialties. It is with this spirit that Saturday 11 May at the Catalunya hotel in Alghero was promoted byAow of Sassari the conference entitled “Hot Topics in Hepato-Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy”sponsored by the University of Sassari.

Following the institutional greetings of the Magnificent Rector of the University of Sassari, Gavino Mariotti and the general director of the Aou of Sassari, Antonio Lorenzo Spanothe scientific directors of the course will open the proceedings Giuliano Alagna director of the Simple Departmental Structure of Hepatology e Luigi Cugiadirector of the complex structure of Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy of the University Hospital of Sassari.

The course is divided into four alternating sessions several local and national experts, who will be able to meet in a multidisciplinary manner and discuss the best therapeutic strategies regarding advanced chronic liver disease caused by B, C and DELTA viruses. Furthermore, attention will be focused on two hot topics represented by the news regarding steatohepatitis therapy and the correct use of albumin.

We will talk about obesity which is now considered one endemic disease. Specifically, obesity is very widespread in Western countries, where approximately 1/3 of the inhabitants are overweight. Obesity represents one of the main public health problems worldwide, both because its prevalence is constantly and worryingly increasing also in low-middle income countries, and because it is an important risk factor for various chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases and tumors.

There bariatric surgery it is currently considered the “gold standard” for the treatment of morbid obesity. But surgical therapy has very specific and limited indications and is still not well accepted by patients even if they are severely obese. Considering the increase in average lifespan, the progress in diagnostic capabilities as well as the effectiveness of treatments, doctors today find themselves increasingly managing elderly patients with multiple comorbidities and advanced diseases.

The training event was accredited by Agenas with 6 CME credits and is aimed at 100 doctors of the following disciplines: General surgery, Gastroenterology, Infectious diseases, General medicine, Internal medicine, Radiodiagnostics.
