Salerno, the forgotten viewpoint of via Indipendenza: the online petition “Let’s save it” starts

After the gardens of Piazza Matteo Luciani and the green area of Piazza Alario, walking along Via Indipendenza, along a road that many tourists decide to walk along to reach the beauties of the Amalfi Coast, you arrive at what was once a lookout point, an ancient garden terrace overlooking the Gulf of Salerno. But all that remains of that green corner is neglect and abandonment.

The citizens who signed

Almost 500 citizens have signed the online petition, launched by Francesco Scala from Salerno on Change.org, which asks to recover and restore the ancient beauty of the belvedere between Salerno and Vietri sul Mare.

Let’s save those places, let’s make our voice heard loudly by the administration which boasts of a European city that has changed its face, like only Milan in the recent period”, we read on the site.

The area has now become a degraded area where barriers and orange tapes also prohibit entry.

A terrible postcard made of broken branches and cracked floors, rusty railings and stairs used as a landfill. Wild vegetation now reigns supreme. And only a memory remains of that garden that once welcomed passers-by to enjoy the view and the greenery of its small flowerbeds.

A place dear to the people of Salerno

A place dear to Salerno residents also because in the area there are still two majolica fountains, covered with blue-coloured ceramic tiles. The last examples of the ancient fountains of Salerno from the 1990s, later replaced throughout the city by new installations. Old “pieces” of a forgotten Salerno, abandoned like the place where they are kept.

There have been many reports from citizens over the years. In 2012, members of the social group “Figli delle Chiancarelle” brought the conditions of the area to the attention of the superintendent, asking to recover it and restore the two fountains.

Now the voice of the people of Salerno is once again being heard, relaunching the appeal to recover a place that is a symbol of the city’s identity.
