The “INSIEME” concert was held on Wednesday 8 May at the Romolo Valli Theater in Reggio Emilia with Antonella Lo Coco, Giampaolo Costi and the extraordinary participation of Nomadi as well as several artists belonging to the Italian musical panorama.
The proceeds from this charity concert were donated to the Progetto Pulcino Association which since 2008 has been raising funds for the purchase of cutting-edge machinery and equipment and for the funding of refresher and training courses in favor of the Complex Structure of Neonatology and Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) of the Santa Maria Nuova Hospital in our city .
Thanks to the extraordinary success of the event, which saw the sale of almost all tickets, and the support of numerous donors, Alessandra Davoli, President of Progetto Pulcino, presented the equipment for the management of therapeutic hypothermia – worth €30,500 – which has already been purchased and will be donated to the Neonatology and Neonatal Intensive Care Department of the Santa Maria Nuova Arcispedale directed by Dr. Giancarlo Gargano.
This device is an indispensable tool for the targeted management of body temperature in young patients. Until a few years ago there was no therapeutic option for conditions of perinatal asphyxia, other than assisting the newborn at the moment of birth with prompt resuscitation. In recent decades, a specific treatment, known as therapeutic hypothermia which consists of keeping the newborn at risk of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy at temperatures of 33.5-34°C for 72 hours. The introduction of this procedure started within the first 6 hours of life has revolutionized the prognosis of newborns suffering from hypoxic-ischemic encephaly. This new machine will allow careful and continuous monitoring of temperature through more precise servo-control mechanisms, introducing much more comfortable containment systems and mitigating side effects with an improvement in the quality of care.
Asphyxia still represents one of the main causes of neonatal mortality and often disabling long-term neurological outcomes. The incidence of birth asphyxia is far from irrelevant, being between 3-4 cases per 1000 births. Perinatal asphyxia, i.e. the set of conditions that lead to hypooxygenation of the fetus or newborn before, during or after birth, can determine the onset of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), a severe neurological syndrome typical of newborns in term.
Alessandra Davoli and the board would like to thank all the spectators who purchased concert tickets, the artists who took to the stage, the numerous donors, the Municipality, the Local Health Unit of Reggio Emilia, the Fondazione I Teatri, the firefighters, Antonella Lo Coco and Giampaolo Costi who was the creator and organizer of this concert and who, with great enthusiasm and enthusiasm, decided to involve Progetto Pulcino in this initiative.
