CREMONA – It is in the long term that the development of Cremona, a university city, must be seen. This is what the report dedicated to students and graduates in the universities of the province of Cremona, carried out by the statistical office of the provincial administration and edited by Michela Dusi. And in fact, «if compared to the year 2022/2023, in the academic year 2023/24 there was a slight decrease in students (-97, 4%) – we read -, if we look at five years ago the students they increased overall by 25% (+461 students). The greatest growth occurred at the Catholic University of Milan (+44%), followed by the Polytechnic of Milan (+38%) and the University of Pavia (+17%), while the number of students at the University decreased of the Brescia studios (-11%)”.

These data speak of a constant and encouraging development, if we consider the post-Covid years. The comparison with last year, however, sees a drop in the number of students enrolled at the Polytechnic by 18, by 54 students at the Cattolica and by 25 students enrolled at the University of Brescia. The Department of Musicology and Cultural Heritage and the Monteverdi Conservatory recorded a slight increase. The report also documents the most popular degree courses. They have the highest number of students enrolled in Management Engineering (242 students) and Computer Engineering (248 students) from the Polytechnic of Milan and Business Economics (223) from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore.

No less interesting is the gender distinction, according to which: «it turns out that males are 1,231 (54%) and females 1,045 (46%) – writes Michela Dusi -. The gender difference is more evident at the University of Milan, where the female gender prevails (girls are 85% and boys 15%) and at the Polytechnic of Milan, where the male gender prevails (boys are 77% and girls 23%)”.

As regards the origins, it is observed that «approximately a third of the students attending provincial universities come from the province of Cremona (822, 36%) – states the report -. This is followed by students from the neighboring provinces of Brescia, Milan, Piacenza, Lodi, Bergamo, Mantua and Parma, a total of 691, 30%, while students from the rest of Italy are 763, 34%”.

As regards foreign students «the majority attend the Polytechnic of Milan (68, 34%) and the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan (60, 30%). Followed by the University of Brescia with 30 foreign students (15%), that of Pavia with 24 foreign students (12%), the Istituto Superiore di Studi Musicali Monteverdi di Cremona with 10 (5%) and the University of studios in Milan with 6 (3%) – explains Dusi -. Foreign students come mainly from: China (21), the majority attend the Polytechnic of Milan, Romania (15), half attend the University of Brescia, India (11), the majority attend the Polytechnic of Milan , France (10), the majority attend the Catholic University of Milan.”
