Since Prof. Nuccio Ordine left earthly life almost a year ago, not only the University of Calabria, but all of Italian culture and the academic world have lost one of its best teachers. We have the task of eternalizing his memory, as is being done today, aware of the great wealth of knowledge that he contributed to building and which represents an exceptional legacy for the new generations. And this is why we will identify an important place in the city which we will soon name after him”

This was said by the Mayor of Cosenza, Franz Caruso, in bringing the greetings of the city of Cosenza yesterday to the initiative entitled “Nuccio Ordine, a lesson” with which the “Stefano Rodot” Library of the “Bernardino Telesio” Classical High School wanted remember the figure of Prof. Nuccio Ordine, professor of Italian literature at the University of Calabria, almost a year after his death on 10 June last year. “Nuccio Ordine, to whom I was linked by a sincere friendship – underlined Franz Caruso – is without a doubt one of the most cultured figures, in the fullest sense of the term, that Calabria and the entire country have been able to include in their recent history. and we are proud of his belonging to our land”. The Mayor of Cosenza also outlined a profile of the university professor and scholar from Cosenza, “a personality – added Franz Caruso – deeply structured, strong in academic baggage, made up of constant studies and research, as well as recognitions given, with good reason , from universities all over the world and from the most diverse and accredited institutions. Nuccio was not just an academic – Franz Caruso also underlined in his memory – but he was a man who knew how to live and who participated in the most diverse activities that occupied him with great passion. During our not many occasions of meeting – as he was used to traveling the world – he made us feel the presence of a person who did not sit in the chair, even though he was the professor we all knew. He established a great empathy with people, because he knew how to convey his knowledge with great naturalness, that of the great academic.” For Franz Caruso Nuccio Ordine “was not detached from the political context and never failed to make his cultural contribution to politics”. So the Mayor of the city established a parallel between Nuccio Ordine and Giacomo Matteotti, both of whom passed away on 10 June. Ordine in 2023, Matteotti in 1924. “This year – said Franz Caruso – we celebrate the centenary of the barbaric murder of Matteotti and we remember Nuccio Ordine one year after his death. The parallel I mentioned focuses on the messages that both transmitted to the world. Matteotti transmitted the values of the defense of freedom and democracy and Nuccio transmitted them with the same strength and vehemence, because he was a staunch defender of freedom and democracy. There was no occasion in which he did not express these two values”.

Nuccio Ordine’s cursus honorum was later remembered by Franz Caruso as a path “built and nourished in the field and which made him one of the greatest scholars of the Renaissance and of Giordano Bruno, as well as one of the most representative professors of the University of Calabria . The city of Cosenza is still grateful to him today because Nuccio stubbornly wanted the Telesiani, Bruniani and Campanelliani Study Center of which he was President to be located in our historic centre, in Palazzo Caselli-Vaccaro. A Center that Prof. Ordine created with the aim of giving life to a Library capable of offering scholars from all over the world the works of Bernardino Telesio, Giordano Bruno and Tommaso Campanella, scattered everywhere, in other libraries, and also all the critical work on the three thinkers, to make it a center of excellence and a true philosophical pole. An objective that the municipal administration will undertake to carry forward in the direction he traced and with the help of whoever took over as president, Prof. Gianluigi Greco”.
