“Reduced mowing” is also practiced in Legnano: what it is and what it is for
Legnano – Walking around the city you may come across green areas where the grass is unusually tall. An “oddity”, this, which in reality is not the result of poor management of public green spaces, but is a technique aimed at promoting urban biodiversity. Is called “reduced mowing” and it is a practice adopted in several European and Italian cities, such as Milan. Also to Legnano is implemented ecological management of meadows and reduced cutting with the aim also of promote insect pollination.

The tall grass in some periods of the year and in some areas responds to an orientation that is affecting the whole Europe. A lawn mowed at ground level may be beautiful from an aesthetic point of view, but it is not very functional from an ecological point of view.
Reduced mowing

Vavassori states that many insects, such as bees and butterflies (but not only), they favor flowering and the formation of seeds or fruits.
The ecological benefits of a tall, flowery lawn are, therefore, diverse and numerous. Reduced mowing allows you to: increase urban biodiversity, including pollinating insects; “trap” i polluting gasesthe fine dust and the CO2; increase the soil fertility and its ability to absorb water; purify, filter and humidify the air.
Mosquito predators
“The Post” reported the concern of Roberto Burioni regarding the adoption of reduced mowing in Milan. Burioni’s fear is that, among other insects, the mosquitoes. The spread and containment of some mosquito species is health interest, especially following the concern about the spread of Dengue. However, as the entomologist explained Leonardo Forbicionithe increase in biodiversity would also favor presence of a greater number of animal species that feed on mosquitoes and which, therefore, would contain the population.
