PORDENONE – Four deaths at work since the beginning of the year in the region, the last one on the eve of May 1st in the province of Pordenone. But there’s more. Western Friuli itself has been placed within the red zone, i.e. the one which has a higher incidence than the national average. A situation that should make us reflect, but above all, as has been highlighted by many, it should move hiring in the Inspectorates of work so as to have people who carry out checks in factories and construction sites every day. The situation in the region is dramatic: out of 108 foreseen in the workforce, 48 are at work. Try to think which area is most affected by these absences? Exactly, Pordenone, which ranks at the top of the national rankings in terms of accidents at work. Yet people die from work.

LABOR INSPECTORS

There are 27 staff positions in Pordenone which has its own office, but in fact it depends on Udine where the service manager is located. The fact is that there are only 13 at work, the others are completely empty staff positions. Notwithstanding that with With 13 labor inspectors on duty it is certainly not possible to cover an area which from a numerical point of view is full of small and large companiesas well as construction sites, there is a further problem that slows down visits for checks. In fact, there are thirteen administrative posts associated with the Pordenone Labor Inspectorate. Well, only three are employed, one of which is part time. Moral of the story, the staff dedicated to inspection visits must also deal with administrative problems, thus taking time away from checks.

THE EXITS

Faced with these numbers, it becomes increasingly complicated for inspectors to plan a series of interventions on the workplace day after day, limiting themselves, in fact, to “institutional” outings, those connected with other police bodies (Finance, Carabinieri, Police Headquarters ) and little else. Therefore, a deterrent fades away which should instead be one of the most targeted ones to try to keep people on edge and force them to use all possible and imaginable safety measures in the workplace. The regional councilor Massimo Moretuzzo, among other things, had asked that the Region work to be able to use its special statute and take charge of the National Inspectorate Service by immediately implementing the staff. The issue will explode again with the next death at work. Cynical, but unfortunately real.

THE GOAL

«While accidents at work are increasing, the inspectors called to carry out checks are half of those expected. There is an urgent need to strengthen the workforce because the battle of civilization against accidents cannot be limited to the laudable declarations of intent made in the wake of tragedies, but requires concrete actions on the prevention side.” This was stated by regional councilor Nicola Conficoni (Pd), who in recent weeks presented a question to draw attention to the lack of staff in service in the National Labor Inspectorate in Pordenone. «Recent statistics – continues Valentina Francescon, representative for the productive activities of the regional secretariat of the dem – have photographed a worrying situation in particular in western Friuli. In our area, unfortunately, the overall number of accidents has further increased and the incidence of fatal ones is the fourth highest in Italy after Catanzaro, Asti and Ferrara”.

DRAMATIC EVENTS

«These dramatic events which also affect the families of the victims and have a high social cost – concludes councilor Conficoni – must push us to do more to combat a plague that needs to be eradicated both by spreading the culture of safety and by carrying out adequate checks on basic compliance with the rules. The thirteen inspectors on duty in Pordenone, however, are half of the twenty-seven expected on staff. Even more suffering are the only three out of fifteen administrative offices operating on the banks of the Noncello. Overcoming this staff shortage would undoubtedly contribute to prevention.”
