The banknotes were printed with the “offset” process which, compared to the digital technique, allows for the creation banknotes extremely similar to the original ones.

The financiers, who went into action at dawn, found the two counterfeiters in bed, who had lived practically in isolation in a warehouse in the Ponticelli district since April. In the shed there were approx 80,000 sheets each containing 12 50 euro banknotes practically ready: they just had to be cut to affix the silver vertical band.

To prevent production from stopping, the gang used a sutler who provided for needs of the two “inmate” counterfeiters: he was the one who kept in touch with the boss, a 70-year-old printer with numerous criminal recordswhich coordinated the production and also the logistical support using three hauliers from Giugliano in Campania.

From the investigations, coordinated by the deputy Maria Di Mauro, it emerged that the printing plant had only recently been transferred to Naples from the province, precisely from Casavatore, and that it would have come into operation at full capacity right in the month of April. To accommodate the imposing machinery, the shed (rented from an environmental reclamation company unrelated to the investigations and kept under surveillance by cameras) had been appropriately modified, also including household goods such as beds and various furniture.
