Constant in Sicily: «The union is proximity»

The Fnsi general secretary met colleagues in Enna, Caltanissetta and Agrigento. “There is an attack on the citizens’ right to be informed and on those who defend it”, she highlighted, expressing solidarity with the president of Trapani, who ended up in the crosshairs of some newspapers in relation to the controversy following the strike called by Usigrai on Monday 6 May.

Day of meetings in Sicily, Tuesday 7 May 2024, for the Fnsi general secretary, Alessandra Costante. First appointment in Enna, where he met the journalists Manuela Acqua, Pierelisa Rizzo and Filippo Occhino, denounced by Giuseppe Rugolo, the priest sentenced by the Court of Enna on 5 March to 4 years and 6 months for aggravated sexual violence against minors. At the meeting, wanted by the provincial secretariat of Assostampa Enna, the director of the Fnsi Tommaso Daquanno and the president of the regional council of Assostampa Sicily Tiziana Tavella were present. Costante expressed the union’s closeness to her colleagues.

In the morning event at Kore University. Moderated by Elvira Terranova, head of the Sicilian branch of Adnkronos, speakers included Patrick Zaki, Tiziana Tavella, the president of the Cataldo Salerno University, the president of the National Council of the Order of Journalists Carlo Bartoli, the co-director of Tgr Rai and president of the regional Order Roberto Gueli, the president of the Occhiblu association, Filippo Mulè.

«I’m happy to talk about journalism in front of many young people because too often we do it only among us ‘experts’», began Costante. «Italy – he added – is moving backwards in the international rankings on freedom of the press. There is an attack on citizens’ right to be informed: gag laws, reckless complaints weigh heavily and the press is increasingly under control, as in the case of RAI.”

And in relation to the controversy following the Rai journalists’ strike, on Monday 6 May, Costante expressed solidarity with the Fnsi president, Vittorio di Trapani, who came under the radar of some newspapers for the phrases uttered during the press conference promoted by Usigrai to the foreign press.

In the afternoon the general secretary met with her colleagues from Assostampa Caltanissetta with whom, speaking about the value of journalism in the territories, introduced by the secretary of the provincial Assostampa Pierpaolo Olivo, she remarked that «the union is proximity, being a union is not only doing the great battles, it’s daily fatigue. Sicily – you observed – is a region that needs presence because where workers struggle to have their rights recognized there the union must be present”.

Closing of the day in Agrigento, where Costante participated as a speaker in the training course, moderated by the treasurer of Assostampa Agrigento and regional councilor of the union Dario Broccio, entitled ‘Journalists yesterday, today is tomorrow: the profession that changes, the profession that will be between freedom of the press, gag rules, precarious journalism, ethical charters. Limits of the right to report, risks and rights of journalists’.

At the table with the number one of the Fnsi, introduced by the secretary of the Agrigento section of Assostampa Gero Tedesco, there were Roberto Gueli, Tiziana Tavella, Tommaso Daquanno, the national councilor of the Fnsi Roberto Ginex and Sergio Magazzù, provincial secretary of Assostampa Messina and deputy secretary regional vicar of Ussi Sicily.
