Palermo – There are five workers died in an accident at work in Casteldacciain the Palermo area: the workers were busy working on the sewer system and fainted for fumes inside the lifting tanks and then they passed away. A sixth worker is in very serious condition, transported to the Policlinico hospital in Palermo.

According to the Sicilian CGIL they would be two hypotheses at the origin of the tragedy: inhalation of gas or structural failure.
Some relatives of the five dead workers arrived at the site of the workplace tragedy.
“If all the necessary precautions had been taken, all of this would not have happened.” This was said by the provincial commander of the Palermo fire brigade Girolamo Bentivoglio Fiandra regarding the workplace accident in Casteldaccia which cost the lives of five workers. Bentivoglio confirmed that the victims were killed by hydrogen sulphide fumes and ruled out that there was a collapse inside the sewers.

CGIL: ‘Builders’ strike will last 8 hours tomorrow in Palermo’
Tomorrow a 4-hour and 8-hour general strike by builders in the province of Palermo. This was announced by Piero Ceraulo, secretary of the construction workers of the CGIL of Palermo who together with other union leaders is in Casteldaccia where 5 workers died. A demonstration is planned in front of the Prefecture at 9am.
The 4-hour general strike, at the beginning of the shift, was proclaimed by the provincial secretariats of CGIL, CISL and UIL, and by the chemical, water and energy sector acronyms Filctem Cgil, Femca Cisl and Uiltec Uil.
Tragic accident at work in Casteldaccia (Palermo). Seven workers were involved who were carrying out some maintenance work on a submersible pump located in the sewerage system near the Corvo winery: 5 lost their lives. They would have been trapped, becoming intoxicated by the fumes. When the alarm was raised, several 118 ambulances and fire brigade teams arrived on the scene. Three workers were pulled out immediately after the firefighters intervened. One of them, in desperate conditions, was transported by air ambulance to hospital. The police arrived on site. Among the victims there was an Amap employee, the others were working for an external company.
