Imran, a child from Sierra Leone, recently captured the attention and hearts of an entire community in Veneto, becoming the symbol of how solidarity and joint action can transcend any barrier. Born in one of the poorest countries in the world, Imran suffered from a serious heart disease that, without surgery, would have prevented him from making it through the first year of life. The necessary resources and medical expertise were non-existent in Sierra Leone, but thanks to the commitment of Father Maurizio Boa, a missionary originally from Badoere and active for years in Africa, Imran’s destiny took a decisive turn. With the support of the mayor of Morgano, Daniele Rostirolla, and the governor of Veneto, Luca Zaia, Imran and his mother Elisabeth were brought to Italy. Here, under the coordination of the Director General of the Ulss of Padua, Giuseppe Dal Ben, Imran was operated on by a team of pediatric cardiac surgeons led by professor Vladimiro Vida.
On May 1, during the asparagus exhibition which saw a large turnout of visitors, Imran became the center of attention. Luca Zaia, present at the event, welcomed Imran in his arms, receiving smiles that lit up the square and warmed the hearts of those present. This gesture symbolized not only the victory over the disease, but also the success of a community that came together to make a difference. “My thanks go to all those who saved little Imran’s life, in what is in all respects a Venetian miracle,” declared Zaia, underlining how the entire operation was a perfect example of collaboration and altruism. Mayor Rostirolla, visibly moved, added: “When I saw him in his mother’s arms, I got goosebumps. It is a memory that I will carry with me, more precious than any public work or administrative success.” Now in excellent health, Imran is hosted in Morgano, where he awaits the moment to return home to Sierra Leone, bringing with him the memory of an experience that changed his life and that of an entire community.
