Lombardy Region investigates cross-border workers’ salaries for the new health tax, Switzerland raises a wall

The Lombardy region tries to ‘attack’ the salaries of cross-border workers in Switzerland to fund the new health tax but receives the first no’s from across the border. As is known, Pirellone intends to collect a health contribution from old cross-border workers which will range between 30 and 200 euros to increase the benefits up to a maximum of 20%. salaries of doctors and nurses who work near the border and who increasingly move to Swiss hospitals. And so in recent days Lombardy region sent requests to cantons of Ticino, Valais and Grisons for information on how much i cross-border workers and on which of them pays the health insurance in Swiss. This information is useful for understanding where to raise cash to collect the disputed amount contribution on health paid by old cross-border workers, hired before July 2023.

The requests from the Lombardy Region, however, have raised doubts Martin Bühlerdirector of the Graubünden Finance Department, who declared to Swiss Radio and Television: “The Lombardy Region wants to have information on the salaries and the health insurance situation of cross-border workers, but we had to tell the Lombard managers that for the moment we do not have a legal basis to provide these data”.

And again: “We understand the needs of Lombardy – explained Bühler –, but we also ask for understanding for our situation. We want to maintain a good dialogue, but we also want to have a good situation for our southern Grisons valleys.” In short, for the moment the vast front of those opposed to this health tax – from the vast majority of cross-border workers but also from many parts of Switzerland itself – have scored a point in their advantage.
