Florence introduces an innovative project focused on the use of the bicycle called: “Pedala, Florence rewards you”. This initiative aims to promote the adoption of cycling as a means of urban transport through a system of financial incentives. Citizens who join the program will be able to enjoy a monthly contribution.
The prizes expected for the participants can arrive up to 100 euros. The heart of the project consists of a kit provided by Pin Bike, which includes a Bluetooth hardware device to certify the actual use of the bicycle, a smartphone holder to be mounted on the handlebars and warning lights to ensure safety during travel.
Starting from May 13th, interested citizens will be able to book the kit online via the Pin Bike application and fill out an application form. From May 20th, it will be possible to collect the kit at the URP counters in the various neighborhoods of the city. Once the kit has been installed, starting from June 3rd, it will be enough to pedal to accumulate the benefits provided by the program. The prizes will be paid out through bank transfers directly to the current account.
While many may object to the use of public funds for additional bonuses, no doubt the project seems to be well thought out. We just have to see how much the Florentine citizens will choose this solution and whether it will be successful in the long term. The refunds provided will depend on the type of travel: those who switch from a motor vehicle to a bicycle will receive a reimbursement of 20 cents per kilometer for home-work and home-school/university routes, with a further bonus of 5 cents per kilometer on general routes within the Municipality. The maximum accruable amounts will be 2 euros per day and 30 euros per month. For those who already used the bicycle for home-work and home-school/university trips, the reimbursement will be 15 cents per kilometre, with an additional bonus of 5 cents per kilometer on general routes, with a maximum of 1.20 euros per day and 30 euros per month.
