Po river district, high availability of water resources

The section of the Po river in Cremona is in hydrological conditions of “severe humidity”. The hydrometric level of the Po river at the height of the Bridge has been increasing since yesterday (2 May) until it reached -1.22 m this afternoon (3 May).

The current season is progressing well beyond the wildest expectations in terms of water availability; the abundant and repeated rainfall recorded in the months of March and April favored this a significant recovery of outflows in all the watercourses of the District and the filling of all major reservoirs, including the Great Lakes.

The precipitation which in the Alps was almost always snowy at medium-high altitudes allowed the achievement of record valuesfor the period, of the snow cover. The volume of water stored in the form of snow is close to 5 billion cubic metersa value higher than the typical references of the period.

From the processing of the latest meteorological and hydrological data available, it emerges that the sections of the Po river CremonaBoretto, Borgoforte and Pontelagoscuro appear to be in hydrological conditions of “severe humidity”while the one located further upstream among the reference ones, namely Piacenza, has a hydrological condition of “moderate humidity.”

Starting from the beginning of April, i.e. when there was a notable increase in flow values which, in the Pontelagoscuro section, determined a peak of just under 5000 m3s-1, the outflows in all the main sections considered were characterized by a gradual reduction, interrupted by increases which occurred towards the middle and end of April, although always remaining at values higher or at most close to the historical average.

As regards the regulated Great Lakes, these are characterized by hydrometric heights close to or higher than the average reference values and by the achievement of values even close to the corresponding maximum as regards Lake Iseo. All lakes deliver flows in line with the average.

The weather forecast for the next few daysfor the territory of the Po District, present scattered rainfall and temperatures in line with the typical values of the period. Considering the current availability of water resources at a district scale and the most up-to-date seasonal forecasts There are no particular critical issues in meeting the various needs (irrigation, industrial, productive and civil) in the coming months.
