The ports of Taranto and Brindisi are bidding to host one of the new shipyards intended for the production of machinery and equipment for the construction of new offshore wind farms.

This was announced by the Port System Authority of the Ionian Sea which communicated how its Management Committee met specifically in an extraordinary session on the afternoon of 3 May to discuss the presentation of an expression of interest for the identification of areas maritime state property with related bodies of water outside the breakwater defenses to be used for the construction of infrastructures suitable for guaranteeing the development of investments in the shipbuilding sector for the production, assembly and launching of floating platforms and electrical infrastructures functional to the development of the shipbuilding industry ship for the production of wind energy at sea.

The Apulian ADSP recalls in a note that the public notice issued by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security on 18 April invites the Italian port authorities “to apply in order to achieve the energy transition objectives to promote the development of technology offshore wind power in the relevant ports, encourage the development of a more sustainable economy and promote innovation in the maritime sector”.

The ADSP chaired by Sergio Prete announced that it will present “a joint application with the ADSP of the Southern Adriatic Sea for the ports of Taranto and Brindisi with the coordination of the Puglia Region with which the technical and administrative evaluations are already underway”.

During the meeting the president “illustrated – we read in the communication – the areas and related bodies of water identified, thanks to the active support of the local Port Authority Command, as suitable areas to be nominated based on the requirements and technical characteristics envisaged by the The public notice and the members of the Management Committee expressed their unanimous favorable opinion regarding an initiative that goes in the direction of valorising the resources available to the Ionian port to aspire to the status of energy hub in the Mediterranean area”.

The public notice of the Ministry of the Environment is aimed at acquiring “expressions of interest for the identification, in ports falling within the port system authorities or in port areas adjacent to areas in which the gradual elimination of the use of coal, state-owned maritime areas to be used for the construction of infrastructures for the production, assembly and launching of floating platforms and electrical infrastructures functional to the development of shipbuilding for the production of wind energy at sea”.

The deadline is set for May 18th. In addition to Taranto and Brindisi, the other ports most affected by this opportunity are Civitavecchia and Augusta.
