ANCONA – Free and modifiable software, accessibility, sharing and ethical principles in step with the times. We will talk about it tomorrow (4 May) in Monte San Vito, in the province of Ancona. Appointment from 9am (to 5pm) at the Carlo Urbani Tourist Center. Digital, technological dissemination and knowledge of the most varied technological aspects relating to software. Which are the driving force behind our computers and smartphones.

This is the first conference of LibreItalia in the Marche region. The vice-president of Lug, Linux User Group, Giulia Mugianesi, tells us more: «Tomorrow will be a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the universe of free software, where the sharing and the collaboration they are at the center of technological innovation.”

Experts will lead engaging discussions on cutting-edge topics in free software and open source. But what is it, exactly? «We will talk about Libre Office, a free software office tool, with open and free code and developed by (and for) the community, outside the canonical system as we know it. We promote this software in the Italian territory, but also and above all accessible digital culture. The main focus – continues the vice president – is to have opportunities for dissemination and knowledge of all the possibilities we have through the software free to reduce the digital divides».

«Thanks to free software, users are more aware because they know the mechanism in which the machine operates (the PC, the tablet or the smartphone, ed) and can contribute to their modifications (a bit like what happens with Wikipedia, ed). And this opens the discussion not only to a technical digital issue but also to digital rights and to a certain one philosophy of thought and use of digital. Digital which is now very important for any aspect of our lives.” Technology is therefore combined with the ethical and sharing factor.

The vice president of Lug is one woman: let’s ask if they really do figures feminine are less inclined to STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Mugianesi dispels any doubt, proving that there are no purely male or purely female sectors: «I don’t think that women are at a disadvantage in this field. To date, the possibility they are there for everyone – he remarks – However, yes, perhaps there are cultural legacies that also lead a woman to prefer choices over others. But there are many female figures in computer science, even with excellent results. We are the ones who set limits for ourselves, otherwise women have no limitations. Just like men. Probably, this is a sector that attracts more interest from the male public, but I think it is just a cultural legacy. Women are no less talented than men.”
