L’Aquila: finally money and jobs for the municipal theatre

Finally some good news in the troubled process of returning the municipal theater to the city. The 5 million promised to complete the reconstruction have been allocated

The State-Regions conference approved the substantial funding to complete the work. The intervention of the Minister for Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, with whom the Municipality had long undertaken a close, always constant dialogue, and which has now borne fruit, was fundamental. The allocation is included in the strategic plan ‘Major projects – Cultural heritage’, promoted by the minister of culture, and will be included in a specific ministerial decree which will have to be examined and registered by the Court of Auditors, explained the mayor Pierluigi Biondi .

Biondi himself said he was ‘very confident in the outcome of the checks that the accounting and judicial body of the State will have to carry out after the pronouncement of the State-Regions conference’. The announcement of the additional 5 million euros available for the completion of the municipal theater was given last February in L’Aquila by President Marsilio, on the occasion of the signing of the 2021 – 2027 cohesion agreement with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Certainly, this is an important step forward for the return of the municipal theatre, requested in recent years also by the various artists who have participated in events and in the season of the permanent theater of Abruzzo. A place too significant to still be closed 15 years after the earthquake. The hope is to be able to reopen it to the public in 2026 when L’Aquila will be the Italian capital of culture.

In terms of works, the bulk has been done both inside and outside but some work is still missing for the seismic improvement, the scenic technical part, the furnishings, the stage with the various setups. Everything is fine from a project point of view. The municipality had already announced that in the next phase, the current one therefore, in agreement with the Secretariat, the work will return to them who will try everything to shorten the time and give the people of L’Aquila back a sacred place of culture in the historic center which has enjoyed quality and great productions over the years.
