He entered as if he were a customer, walked through the bank’s hinged door undisturbed, pulled out a gun and had the proceeds handed over to him. Then he ran away on his bicycle.
The robbery took place yesterday, May 2, in the center of Como, in the branch of the Bcc Cassa Rurale ed Artigiana di Cantù in Piazza Grimoldi. A man, who entered with his face uncovered, arrived at the bank around 11am and, gun in hand, ordered the teller: “Give me the money!”.
To avoid being recognised, he had applied a fake mustache and beard to his face.
According to investigators, he is definitely a professional. In fact, he had two guns with him. During the robbery, when one of the two dropped and he bent down to pick it up, he immediately took out the other.
When he arrived near the branch he leaned his bike against the wall and entered, with his disguise. Although the door immediately rang, the man was allowed in because the device that detects the presence of metals is very sensitive and almost always rings when someone crosses the threshold. For this reason, without arousing any suspicion, the staff opened the door calmly and the robber entered. At that moment, fortunately, there was only one customer at the counters.
The armed man immediately reached the deputy director of the bank and had the entire package delivered to him, kept in the safe, which would shortly be handed over to the security. The morning’s takings, quickly taken away, amounted to around 24 thousand euros. Once he obtained the loot, he escaped on his bicycle through the streets of the center towards Piazza Verdi and the Teatro Sociale. On his trail are the men of the Como Police Flying Squad who have acquired the video surveillance images and are investigating the incident.
The robber was almost certainly aware that the armored security van would soon arrive to collect the cash kept in the BCC safe in Piazza Grimoldi. Probably, in the previous weeks, he monitored the movements of the security forces before carrying out the attack.
All bank staff and customers were understandably shaken and scared, but fortunately no one was injured. In fact, the man neither shot nor committed any acts of violence.
