TARANTO – Fortunately, the mystery of the American who disappeared in Taranto lasted only a few days. In fact, the 58-year-old man, a civilian member of the crew of a US military ship, who had been missing since the evening of April 29th, showed up alone yesterday at the American consulate in Naples.

At the diplomatic headquarters, the 58-year-old explained the reasons why on the morning of May 1st he did not show up on board the naval unit that cast off its moorings and set sail without him: according to the little information leaked, the issue would be linked to a love meeting.

In fact, during one of the evenings around the city, at the end of a cheerful evening he may have had a romantic encounter which would soon turn into an overwhelming passion to the point of making him forget even the appointment with the rest of the crew.

His disappearance, however, was not formally accompanied by a complaint, but the Port Authority of Taranto reported the case to the police, in turn informed by the US Navy. And so for a few days the policemen searched for him and immediately the information gathered made it possible to exclude violent leads: the privileged trace, as mentioned, was almost immediately the one linked by a sudden love story. The agents in fact collected clues that confirmed that it was a voluntary departure: a sort of passionate escape that evidently lasted longer than expected.

Fortunately, yesterday the man showed up at the offices in Naples and first of all made his traveling companions breathe a sigh of relief who, from the moment the ship left, began to fear that something had happened to the 58-year-old. misfortune. And then they made it possible to close an affair that risked becoming a diplomatic case.
