Supporting families in difficulty and spreading the culture of combating food waste are the fundamental principles of the Memorandum of Understanding which was signed a few days ago in Caltanissetta by Pietro Maugeri, president of Banco Alimentare della Sicilia Odv, and Massimiliano Occhipinti, provincial general secretary of the Italian Unitary Union of Police Workers (Siulp) with the absolute awareness that only with the synergy of multiple actors is it possible to achieve results that can have a positive impact on the territory.

Protocol confirming collaboration started with food collection

The Protocol establishes the goodness of a collaboration that had begun in the previous months with the Food Collection and the subsequent distribution of food to families struggling with economic fragility often, again, a consequence of the pandemic. The objective now is to implement activities related to the distribution of food, the diffusion of the culture of giving and solidarity among the new generations, with particular attention to students.

Sharing and collaboration, this is the common ground of the protocol which certainly represents a significant moment for the Nisse area, bringing together the philosophy of the Food Bank with the operations of the components of the Siulp of Caltanissetta.

The words of Pietro Maugeri

“Not being hungry allows us to be free – declares Pietro Maugeri, president of Banco Alimentare della Sicilia ODV -. It allows us to choose where and how to channel forces and thoughts to find a place in this society. Those who are hungry do not have the strength of this possibility, which is why we are happy to have established a new synergy with Siulp which will allow us to extend our operations in a more widespread way in the Nisse area”.

Being there for the territory. This is the common thread that represents the heart of the protocol and which will be animated by many initiatives, such as the project in schools entitled “Orange Days”, which in recent days has involved new students from Nisse to raise their awareness of the culture of giving and solidarity. The meetings will be conducted by Francesco Gianluca Cottone, for SIULP, and Carla Maria Milisenna, for Banco Alimentare della Sicilia.

“We are happy to be able to start this awareness project in schools – says Massimiliano Occhipinti, Siulp Caltanissetta Provincial General Secretary – because we believe that educating young people in the values of solidarity and sharing is fundamental for building a more just and inclusive society”.
