The report that reveals the education and employment situation in Sassari.

After Workers Day we draw conclusions on the employment situation. In the province of Sassari, as in the rest of Sardinia, the employment issue is still problematic, with the data among the worst in Italy, but a new report reveals very dramatic datathe.

According to a study conducted by Openpolis, with Istat data, for May Day, the Sassari area has below average employment and education rates. The report revealed how these two factors are related to each other, where those who have not graduated often finds it difficult to enter the job market.

National data.

Access to the world of work is more difficult for those who have not obtained a high school diploma, but too many Italians still abandon school. Women who do not obtain a diploma are more penalized, representing only the 25.5% of the employed, against the 53.1% of graduates among young people. It is easy to understand why girls invest more in their studies, but even the percentages of males with a middle school diploma, although better and with smaller gaps, are not positive. The kids employed without a diploma are in fact thel 47.7% versus 60.9% graduates. The gap between young graduates and non-graduates in the job market is high, i.e. 39% versus 57.7%.

However, the situation changes at a territorial level, where generally not having a high school diploma penalizes residents in Northern Italy more and those in Central and Southern Italy less. In the South, having a high school diploma does not translate into greater employment opportunities, even if 27.9% of non-high school graduates and 39.3% of high school graduates are employed.

Sardinia is one of the worst areas in Italy for the ratio of employed to graduates, together with Sicily and Puglia. Most Italian regions are divided into four macro areas. The first is the above average education and employment group, present more in the North East and Central regions. The second is that of the educated but underemployed, i.e. where a higher education does not translate into greater ease in finding employment. Then there is the group of below-average educated, but with above-average employment, present above all in the Northern and Central regions. The last group is typical of some southern regions, including Sardinia. To this area belong those who not only have abelow average education, but they are also under employed.

This means that not in all regions having an adequate education translates into job opportunities, especially in the South, but there are areas of Italy where having a diploma is essential for finding work and other places in the country where not having passed the high school exam does not necessarily translate into an employment penalty.

Sassari data.

The situation in the province of Sassari reflects that of the rest of Sardinia. In Sardinia, being poorly educated penalizes you in the job market, but many young people aged 25-49 have not achieved a diploma. According to the Openpolis report, dropping out of school is a hereditary factor. This is the case of Sardinia and the Sassari area, where the rate of non-graduates is high because the older segments of the population have more frequently only the middle school diploma.

TO Sassari people who have a diploma and belong to adults between 25-49 years are only the 53% and those employed in this range are the 64.6%. Similar situation nearby Alghero with graduates at 50.6% and those with a job at 62.7%. The data looks rosy when compared to that of smaller centers such as Sip, where only 39% of people have achieved high school diploma and 58.4% of people are employed. TO Porto Torres only 40.9% of people have a diploma and 62.2% work.

The ratio between employed and educated is slightly better Stintino, where 52.1% have a diploma and 60% of people work. In most of the municipalities of Sassari, including Gallura, people with a diploma aged 25-49 do not reach 50%. TO Olbia they are only 48%, but employment is slightly higher than in Sassari, with 67.6% of employed people. Only very few areas in Sardinia are part of the “below average education, above average employment” group and none in the “above average education and employment” group.
