News in Catania – SiciliaTv.org

In Catania, the municipal administration led by mayor Enrico Trantino decisively continues its policy of pedestrianization of the historic center. The latest news concerns the establishment of the pedestrian area in Piazza San Francesco d’Assisi, at the end of Via Crociferi. This move had already been announced at the end of March, when the mayor described the area as a pedestrian continuation of Piazza Mazzini, already closed to car traffic in recent weeks.

The stretch of via Crociferi that goes from the intersection with via Teatro Greco to the square is now officially pedestrianized and thus interrupts the continuity of car traffic. Vehicle access will be physically prevented by bollards installed to block transit. This intervention was authorized yesterday by the municipal police commander, Stefano Sorbino, through a change in traffic in the affected area.

To ensure compliance with the restrictions, in addition to the physical blocks, the installation of electronic gates was also approved. The management of these gates has been entrusted to the Amts, the Metropolitan Transport and Parking Company, until 2026. It is expected that the electronic recording of access to the pedestrian area will act as a deterrent against possible violators. However, the effectiveness of these measures remains to be seen, considering the challenges encountered in the Piazza Teatro Massimo area, where surveillance cameras alone are not sufficient to counter violations of the rules by drivers.
