As evening approaches: Bologna the red

Bologna is a painter’s palette where red is absolute sovereign and the other colors serve it devotedly.

The houses, the palaces, the churches and the splendid masterpieces of art and devotion like the mourners and certain Madonnas who seem to speak are red.

The Bolognese curtains are red, the tastiest cured meats are red, starting with mortadella.

The history of this city is red, starting from the cross of its coat of arms, passing through the cardinal red of its papal legates to arrive at the red of its first socialist administrations of the early twentieth century.

And in the evening the red is enhanced, inflamed, giving its best under the last rays of the sun, but if it rains the porches become warm and welcoming. If it wasn’t red what would Bologna be?
