Government checks, especially if they concern heterogeneous majorities such as that of the Municipality of Cuneo, are paths which, when undertaken, rarely lead to definitive and stable solutions.

The art of politics has always been compromise, but what was reached yesterday afternoon to avoid the commissionership in the municipality of the capital cannot be defined as a “political act” but rather a hasty “spartinga” (and a downward one at that) between the Democratic Party and civic list Center for Cuneo.

The Center renounces the request to send its coordinator Beppe Delfino to the Board of Directors of the CRC Foundation in favor of Federico Borgna.

Delfino will have to settle for the seat on the General Council vacated by the latter.

The Center is pleased with the consolation prize and the Democratic Party, for its part, certainly cannot say it is satisfied since the former mayor is not a member of the party.

So far the ingredients of the compromise: all dissatisfied without excesses for either one or the other.

What doesn’t add up – and this was evident from the depressing tone of last night’s speeches, both from the majority and opposition benches – is the fact that a real political agreement between the two main majority forces in the Council is not possible glimpses.

It could not have arisen from yesterday afternoon’s fleeting meeting, where it was basically a matter of patching things up to avoid events from escalating, but neither can it be grasped in a medium and long term perspective.

The mayor, visibly tried, recalled that the administrative program is the characterizing element of the majority, failing to consider that power is instead the real glue between two groups which however now have nothing in common.

Let’s be clear, power has always been an essential part of politics, but even on this aspect one gets the impression that ideas are not clear either in the centrist house or in the PD group.

Vincenzo Pellegrinogroup leader of the Centre, read a laconic “pizzino” to say, in essence, that the abandonment of the room the previous evening was not an act of no confidence, but only a gesture to mark the point on some issues.

Translated: “We don’t like what was decided at all, but we bite the bullet because we prefer to sit on this side rather than the other”.

Claudia Carlileader of the Democratic Party, appeared unconvincing in her attempt to call into question an opposition that “he preaches well, but he scratches badly”.

For her too the conclusions were in the name of “let’s stay together but no one asks us for proof of love because there isn’t any”.

For a couple of months – barring unforeseen events always around the corner – the majority will navigate by sight.

Then, starting from 10 June – after the outcome of the regional elections – it will be understood whether the marriage can continue or whether other elements, much more insidious than the Foundation case, will determine the separation.

The moral of last night’s council meeting could be more or less this: … and they all lived unhappy and discontented.
