Crotone – In the 2011/2012 school year, the Musical high school named after Vincenzo Scaramuzza from Crotone, pianist and composer appreciated throughout the world. An “opportunity” as defined by the current school director Antonio Santoro who is also a music teacher. «Since its inception, the musical high school – explains Santoro – has given young people the opportunity to choose, once they have obtained their high school diploma, to continue their academic career in music or choose other university faculties.
In short, it is specialized but not binding. This is his strength: he allows kids to postpone the choice that becomes so conscious.”
However, at high school they already arrive with a passion for music born from an innate talent or perhaps even acquired during their studies in lower secondary school where they have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument. «Most of our students – adds the manager – have already attended the musical course in middle school, so they have a natural vocation, but there are also “children of art”, self-taught people who love to question themselves or young people who have had band experience, a reality that is deeply felt especially in the municipalities of the province.” The musical training experience in compulsory school therefore proves to be important to support the studies of those young people who intend to continue and deepen the study of music and the instrument but which is equally important in cultural and human growth: «According to some studies – highlights Santoro – music activates some parts of the brain which would otherwise be unused . it is an art form linked to the concept of beauty and someone said: “beauty will save the world”. In short, a particular sensitivity develops in all those who approach this study. We can say that it is definitely an edge. It would therefore be nice, in any school level, to also restore musical education, which is the knowledge of a heritage that belongs to us. Italy is the country of bel canto and we must not forget it. And then I would like to underline that the musical high school does not necessarily have to train only musicians, but also people capable of listening to good music. Furthermore, this path also aims to raise awareness among users of culture.”
