Excellent news forReggio Calabria Airport, which started 2024 in the best way possible. Assaeroporti, the Italian Association of Airport Managers in our country, has published the official traffic data of all airports referring to the month of March 2024 with the partial progression of annual passengers. We therefore have the total for the first quarter of the yearand the data really is exceptional for the Strait port.

Passenger traffic between January, February and March, in fact, al Tito Minniti from Reggio Calabria And increased by 28% compared to the same period a year ago. It is the fastest growing airport in the whole of Southern Italy, and among those that are growing the fastest in the whole country. In percentage terms, only 5 airports did better viz Olbia (+37.8%), Trieste (+37.0%), Rome Fiumicino (+30.7%), Florence (+30.4%) And Ancona (+30.3%). But the most important fact is that Reggio Calabria is growing in contrast to the other Calabrian ports, both of which are in decline (Lamezia -10%, Crotone -5%) confirming the attention of Sacal and the Calabria Region for the Reggio Airport.

Passenger data for the first quarter of 2024 in all the airports of Calabria and Sicily

  • Catania 2,244,615 (+12.4%)
  • Palermo 1,443,747 (+10.5%)
  • Lamezia Terme 471,416 (-10.1%)
  • Trapani 98,633 (-28.6%)
  • Reggio Calabria 74,386 (+27.9%)
  • Comiso 26,693 (-49.0%)
  • Crotone 34,319 (-5.4%)
  • Lampedusa 25,011 (+11.6%)

In absolute terms, the data for the Reggio airport are still very low, but to understand the trend, the percentage that demonstrates the difference compared to last year is more important. With respect to the list it must be specified that theTrapani Airport it was closed to traffic for more than three weeks, from February 25 to March 16, for works on the runway. In any case, the Reggio Calabria’s performance is truly exceptional: in projection it means to already be at 300 thousand passengers per yeari.e. a further increase compared to last year, but this figure is very downwards for two main reasons: first of all these data do not include the arrival of the new Ryanair flights which began connecting the Reggio Emilia airport at the end of April with 8 national and international destinations. It will be a shock in terms of passengers who will further increase traffic from April onwards, in a very considerable way. Furthermore, the first quarter of the year is always, historically, the one with the lowest number of passengers compared to the spring, summer and autumn-Christmas periods, in which there are always more travellers.

It is therefore more than likely, we would say banal and obvious, to expect that Reggio Calabria Airport can return close to its absolute records by 2024then overcome them easily in 2025 when – with this scenario – it is not difficult to think of being able to reach even 1 million passengersan unprecedented figure in the history of the Reggio airport.

The credit for all this obviously goes to Calabria region that with Eyed has decided to reverse course and focus seriously onStrait Airport with the arrival of Ryanair, despite the inefficiencies of the city which is leaking from all sides and has still done nothing – with its local authorities and trade associations – to intercept this extraordinary tourist flow. And instead a Reggio there is someone who, in the face of these concrete facts, babbles about “electoral commercial“: it is truly true that this city has never loved itself.
