Italo Cremona lights up the GAM in Turin and the MART in Rovereto

The debut of Italo Cremonawith the first museum exhibition running since April 24th until September 15th at the GAM-Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art of Turinrepresents the last great work of recovery of the art of the former Twentieth century. The first exhibition dedicated entirely to the artist, curated by Giorgina Bertolino, Daniela Ferrari and Elena Volpatotakes shape where he lived until his death in 1979among figurative works, historical relics and the dark oils of 120 works on displayunited by the theme of Night.

In the gray area of ​​the expressiveness of Cremona a personal dimension takes shape where the dreamlike meets the fantastic and dark humor, in a biography of humanity that portrays apparently different objects on the same level.

A complex picture of the artist’s personal and non-personal experience which is revealed in some symbolic works of the entire exhibition, such as Morning Mirror, MetamorphosisAnd Air of Turinwhich are accompanied by the textual frames of the dystopian novel The tail of the comet of the 1968 and the texts of Shadow Zone of the 1977. The exhibition itinerary is structured into 9 rooms, dedicated to the themes of the art of Cremona: Mirror, Trophies Spoils, Metamorphoses, Follies, Golems, Bodies, Scenes, Apparitions. Each of these highlights an object, a phase, an artistic practice specific to the period of the works exhibited and serves to trace as linear a temporal path of the mutation of Cremona, who over the years has ranged across disciplines such as art, literature and cinema, each of these then symbolically transferred into his works. The fantastic, the grotesque and the surreal also find space in the exhibition chronology of the exhibition, with a selection of paintings collected in the central room, where the colors thicken and the lines become clearer the more the artist delves into the dimension of the absurd .

A more rational dimension takes center stage in the dining room Fifths where the profiles of Turin’s buildings, dyed purple, fill the walls of the GAM. To complete the reconstructive work of CremonaThe Italo Cremona Fund creates an editorial collection published by Alemandi, which traces the life and activity of the artist. The collection includes texts by the curators, illustrations depicting some of his works and unpublished portraits.
