Clashes in Turin, a tear gas canister hits a student in the face

A video of a few seconds in which we see a smoke bomb hitting a student in the face. According to the activists who yesterday – Monday 29 April 2024 – were charged by the police in the square in Turin, it was thrown by a policeman. “Now the kids are better, some have already recovered. Another was in hospital all night and one will be hospitalized in a few days because the tear gas he received in the face broke his nose”, says a student from collective who was in the procession against the G7 which is taking place in Venaria and who witnessed the clashes, “There are about ten students injured, many of them minors”.

The activists came into contact with the police while trying to enter Piazza Carlina where some Extinction Rebellion demonstrators were protesting against the ministers who are currently involved in the G7.

Today the activists wanted to tell their version. Firstly against the violence they report having suffered and then against that narrative which would like their struggle to be conditioned by the Askatasuna social centre. “The use of repression in this city has always been a means heavily used, but this time the police exceeded the limits by using the truncheon in a violent way, but also the water cannon and tear gas. A minor student was hit in the face by a tear gas canister thrown at man’s height”, says the student, “Moreover the newspapers always incriminate Askatasuna who would be the director of any demonstration and movement in this city. Freedom of dissent is necessary”.

In the square yesterday there were student collectives such as Studenti Indipendenti and Cambiare Rotta, but also exponents of Extinction Rebellion. “Turin has become the center of repression”, they explained during a press conference which was convened in via Accademia Albertina on the border with Piazza Carlina. The activists then reiterated the reasons for the protests in recent days against the G7 which are linked to policies to combat climate change which are considered insufficient.
