Reggio Emilia By July 2023 he had reached his well-deserved retirement after many years of sacrifices. Giulia Del Bue she loved her job, but at the same time she was ready for the second phase of her life to be spent with her husband Paolo Borgognone, journalist and music critic, also recently retired. A polyneuropathy instead deprived the woman of this possibility, worsening her health conditions month after month: the doctor from Reggio Emilia she died at the age of 61.
«My wife has dedicated 42 years of her life to public health, facing commitments and challenges with passion and professionalism – states her husband -. She attended nursing school until she was hired and then became a teacher at the school herself. Once you won the competition, you changed various fields at Santa Maria Nuova, until you arrived at the department you aspired to: ophthalmology, specializing as an orthoptist.”
A coat, the white one typical of the profession, which Del Bue had wanted when he graduated in Modena despite continuing to work at the Reggio Emilia hospital, including night shifts: «She specialized in treating strabismic patients and other eye-related diseases. He also assisted in the operating room due to the effects on the limited field of vision. Unfortunately, during the last months of his activity he was already living with the disease.”
An illness, explains her husband, which forced her to move around with a walker or wheelchair, but which did not change anything about their love: «We met dancing 32 years ago – Paolo Borgognone continues in the story -. We stayed talking all evening, then we exchanged home numbers, as cell phones didn’t exist back then. After a couple of weeks I came to visit her in Reggio: I am in fact originally from Rome. From that moment on we were no longer lost: this year we would have celebrated 29 years of marriage.”
Their story was characterized by mutual support: «She passed on to me the passion for dancing, while I, who followed theatrical and musical shows for work, made her discover a world she didn’t know, starting from opera music».
“A cruel fate took you away just when you thought you would enjoy a carefree and cheerful retired life with me. Have a good trip, Doctor Giulia, I miss you dearly”, was the man’s touching memory on Facebook.
Giulia Del Bue’s funeral will take place on Tuesday 30 April at 3pm, starting from the Funeral Home in via Terezin. The funeral home will be open from 10am
