CIVITAVECCHIA – From PD club citizen we receive and publish:
“May Day is a symbolic day. ? the day of the year on which the value of work is remembered. Please remember that our civilization and our democracy rest their foundations on work, to the point that we have placed it in our Constitution as a founding and essential element. This is on the level of principles. On a more concrete level, the inattention towards the hard-working classes has had negative effects on the world of work, even in our city, such as to leave no space for mannered rhetoric or purely celebratory attitudes. As an example, consider the issue of security, low wages, precariousness, constant female and youth unemployment. Reality gives us an image of a society in which not only do inequalities and inequities persist but, over the years, have worsened and, moreover, in our country governed by the right, they are not opposed at all. The gap between those with greater resources and those pushed to the margins has widened. We are going through a phase in which the unemployment rate among young people has exceeded the alarm threshold; precariousness seems to have become a condition of normality; even having a job is no sure guarantee of having banished the specter of poverty; marginality and exclusion is a fact that concerns millions of people. The Democratic Party of Civitavecchia believes that May 1st should be an opportunity to reflect. We hoped that the problem of development and employment would also be considered central in the administrative programs of our city. Unfortunately, however, we have noted a total lack of vision on the part of the city’s right-wing government. Much more effort would have been needed to push Civitavecchia out of a condition of substantial underdevelopment; so that the great opportunities and potential we possess were seized; so that everyone was offered equal opportunities; so that merit and the desire to get involved were rewarded; so that legality and respect for the rules were placed in the foreground; so that the city regains possession of all the resources that belong to it. The PD will, as always, be on the right side; on the side of those who work and the poorest; to support employment levels in all situations in crisis and share useful initiatives to create development and new employment. For us this is the meaning of May 1st. Finally, we would also like it to be an opportunity for a necessary look at the past history of the workers’ movement; to his struggles and sufferings; to his victories as well as his defeats. A look full of gratitude for what has been done and eager to reap the fruit of those experiences to continue the path towards a more just society; in which work-related values have the space they deserve”
