After four months, Viale Campania reopens

It was December 31st when, in Viale Campania in Monza, a crater opened in the road due to the failure of the sewer collector: after more than four months of work, the artery will reopen on May 13th

The reopening of viale Campania

Once the restoration works on the abutment of the collector sold on December 31st have been completed, Viale Campania will reopen to traffic on the afternoon of May 13th.

The artery will once again be passable in both directions. Now that the emergency has been resolved, BrianzAcque – in agreement with the municipal administration of Monza – will start the preventive structural rehabilitation of the large pipe. Objective? Ensure its safety.

The redevelopment of the old collector, whose construction dates back to 1930, will affect the entire road axis, from the San Fruttuoso roundabout to the intersection with Via Borgazzi, for a total length of 1.2 kilometres. For this reason, the central lane will be reserved for the construction site to allow the continuation of the preparatory investigations for the start of the new intervention in complete safety.

A “stent” for the 1930 collector.

In fact, to have as little impact as possible on road traffic, BrianzAcque will carry out the reconstruction of the 2 by 3 meter pipeline using a particular technique, which consists of lowering and pushing another fiberglass pipeline inside the existing large pipe. slightly smaller dimensions. Work activities will take place along the two central lanes.

The project, drawn up by the planning sector of the water company, will be implemented in three distinct phases: the first intervention is intended to complete the necessary underground surveys; the second phase will concern the 600 meters that from number 52 go towards Via Borgazzi; subsequently the third phase will start for a similar length, from number 52 to the Viale Lombardia roundabout. In total it will take about an entire year of work.

Interventions performed

The emergency on Viale Campania began on the last day of 2023 with the sudden collapse of the shoulder of the collector which transports wastewater from the north of Brianza to the San Rocco purifier. To ensure public safety and security, the road was immediately closed. The very first emergency interventions focused on making the area safe through the positioning of micropiles aimed at avoiding further landslides. Activities which already on January 19th, in less than 20 days, had allowed the partial reopening of the single-lane artery, from San Fruttuoso towards San Rocco.

Complex hydraulic engineering works were carried out during the closure. In correspondence with the subsidence, in the stretch between number 58 and the intersection with Via Philips, to repair the subsidence, an ad hoc reinforced concrete structure measuring six by five meters and 4 meters deep was created. In more recent days, the completion of the structure, the backfilling and asphalting of the road surface made it possible to reopen the road.

During the works, slowed down by several waves of bad weather, BrianzAcque kept a bypass active so as to guarantee the regular flow of wastewater and keep the sewerage service functioning.

During all phases of the subsequent works, the Traffic Office of the Municipality of Monza, in collaboration with the Local Police Command, will implement the necessary interventions to guarantee accessibility to all properties located on the sides of the road.
