Commissioner Santarelli: Trentino remains at risk of infiltration by organized crime – News

TRENT. “Trentino Alto Adige is at risk of infiltration by organized crime because it is a rich area with substantial investments in the economy and where criminal organizations manage to reinvest the huge illicit profits.

We saw it at Lona Lases and we have witnessed attempts in Riva del Garda and other areas with high tourist attraction.

We must keep our guard up and remember that safety is not the exclusive responsibility of the police, but is everyone’s responsibility.”

Thus the government commissioner for the province of Trentino, Filippo Santarelli (in the center of the photo), on the occasion of the press conference concluding the mandate.

“In Trentino – said Santarelli – I found an area with a very high respect for the rules. In a context of this type one lives better and there is a high collaboration of the citizens for everyone’s safety”.

Santarelli, originally from Rieti and who arrived in Trento in May 2023, will leave his position tomorrow, the first day of retirement.

As regards the activity to combat organized crime carried out in the last year, Santarelli recalled the various protocols signed in recent months and the creation of the table against criminal infiltration into the economic fabric.

Over the last three years, the data relating to crimes committed in Trentino and in the main cities of the province have overall been in constant decline, Santarelli underlined in the end-of-term press conference. The overall crime figure in the first quarter of 2024 decreased by one percent compared to the previous year.

On the other hand, the number of malicious injuries and thefts in apartments is growing.

“These are aspects – Santarelli specified – that demonstrate a certain aggressiveness in the territory in which prevention and information is needed, as they are often events linked to socio-economic hardship”.

As for theftsin the last quarter there was an increase of around a hundred complaints compared to the previous year, especially in the larger urban centres.

“On this issue – concluded the prefect – greater attention from citizens and involvement of communities is needed. The neighborhood control system must be implemented, which often manages to achieve prevention through the simple activation of citizens”.

Regarding the issue of unaccompanied minors, Santarelli highlighted, on the sidelines, how everyone’s commitment is needed, both from the police force and from the community. “There is no lack of control – he specified – but social measures are also needed to guarantee inclusion in our territory”.

Today the mayor of Trento Franco Ianeselli also met with commissioner Santarelli, yesterday afternoon at Palazzo Geremia.

The mayor presented the high official with a plaque depicting the Eagle of St. Wenceslas in perforated golden metal with the dedication “For his commitment to our city”.

“In this last year of profession in Trento, the synergy between the two institutions – writes the Municipality of Trento in a note – it has always been about collaboration for security in the area, also with attention to the infiltration of organized crime.

The mayor extended his best wishes to the commissioner for a peaceful retirement on behalf of the entire city.”
