Angelana’s season ends with a shy smile, at least against Terni FC she avoids the shame of a further knockout and goes on holiday with the awareness that something better could (and should) have come out of the season put on hold . A vintage that was half beautiful and then dragged wearily towards an ending that did not do justice to the efforts made in the summer, when expectations were certainly of a completely different tone. And an eighth place cannot make an environment happy that was definitely aiming to compete in other areas of the rankings.
The last performance has the air of an end-of-season picnic: there is no Gregori on the bench (disqualified), replaced by the goalkeeping coach Franco Checcarelli, and neither are Subbicini and Bolletta, whose season has ended in the unfortunate away match against Castiglione del Lago. The defense was revolutionized with Bartolini and Sallaku at full back and the tandem Bocci and Melillo at centre. Sforna and Vitaloni find a starting shirt, but the match (as logic dictates) struggles to take off, also because Terni FC is only careful not to lose pieces in view of the national play-offs. The first half has little to tell: two shots sent high by Tozzi Borsoi, a poisonous free kick from Colombi rejected by Cunzi and a goal disallowed for offside (clearly) by Gabrielli. But then at the end of the half a construction from below goes haywire and allows Gubbiotto to shoot on goal with the first intention, with Ravanelli’s fortuitous deflection which puts Buini out of action for the guest’s advantage.
In the second half, Angelana, wounded in her pride, presses on the accelerator in search of an equalizer: she comes very close with a header from Ravanelli, served by Bartolini, on which the new substitute Ambrogi performs a real miracle, then saved by the post on the left-handed shot from 25 meters by Ventanni. However, the Terni goalkeeper can’t do anything about Bartolini’s low shot (taken by Colombi) who seals the score at 1-1 with 4′ to go. It is the last goal of the team’s 28 of the season (against 40 conceded), with “El Barto” joining Luparini and Ventanni in second place in the ranking of the best Giallorossi scorers behind Colombi, leader with 12 goals.
It’s up to Franco Checcarelli to sum up a year that Angelana ended in a balanced way (10 wins, 10 draws and 10 defeats). “A year with two faces, good in the first part, decidedly less good in the second, when due to many vicissitudes and problems the team was unable to maintain the speed of the first part. But the boys gave everything right up until the end, honoring the championship and demonstrating that they also wanted to avoid the disappointment of finishing with another knockout. In the first half, Terni FC did more, but then in the second half we were the ones who had many opportunities to score, and in the end the equalizer was more than deserved.”
