PAVIA – A three and a half month construction site to build the bridge that will connect the Maugeri and Mondino clinics to the San Matteo polyclinic: this is the reason that will cause the closure of the University Institutes/Hospitals junction on the Western Ring Road of Pavia, in the direction of Milan. The flyover, built in the 1990s together with the ring road, had never been opened due to bureaucratic obstacles. Now, thanks to the intervention of Milan-Serravalle, not only will the bridge be inaugurated, but the entire area will be redeveloped.

The opening of the bridge has been long awaited, especially for the positive impact it will have on traffic: it is hoped that it will ease traffic on Via Taramelli, where a temporary roundabout has already been built for ambulances heading to San Matteo. The new connection should also create a “ring” that will streamline circulation in one of the busiest areas of the city.

Work and diversions

The works in the University Institutes junction will last until August 9th. During this period, the closure will only concern the northern carriageway (direction Milan), while those traveling southbound will regularly be able to use the opposite exit.

For those coming from the north and heading towards the hospitals, the recommended alternative routes are:

  • Exit Via Tavazzi and then follow the signs for the hospitals
  • Exit Via Certosa and then follow the signs for the hospitals

In addition to the construction of the bridge, the project also includes the completion of the access ramps and the connection of the bridge to the Polyclinic area, interventions which will be carried out by the Municipality. Also in the summer, the expansion of the roundabout in the Mondino area is also planned. Both projects are entirely financed by the Lombardy Region. If there are no unforeseen events, the new bridge could be inaugurated by the end of the year.

The closure of the University Institutes/Hospitals interchange will cause some inconvenience for motorists, but the medium and long-term benefits will be considerable, both in terms of mobility and urban redevelopment. The opening of the bridge and the interventions connected to it will streamline traffic, improve accessibility to hospitals and contribute to the redevelopment of an important area of the city.
