A small earthly paradise a few steps from the center of Terni, left abandoned for years and now rediscovered thanks to the good will of a young man from Terni and the help of some associations. The stretch of the Nera river between the Santa Maria Maddalena bridge and the Cervara bridge is coming back to life, increasingly frequented by those who love walking and trekking, but also by young people who are not afraid of diving into the icy waters of the river. On Sunday, with the return of the sun and high temperatures, there were dozens of attendees.

A treasure hidden among the vegetation

Last winter, 29-year-old Samuele Marroni, who arrived here for the first time 12 years ago thanks to an organized excursion, rediscovered and reopened the path – which is partly located close to the future Staino-Cascata delle Marmore cycle/pedestrian path. from the ‘Metelli’ art high school. «The route, frequented mainly by fishermen, had remained open – explains he-him, but the situation was particularly critical, between the unkempt vegetation and the abandoned waste. So I started installing the red and white ribbons to indicate the passage, then I decided to involve the Terni section of the CAI to raise awareness of the path. At the beginning of April, the Mi Rifiuto! group joined in, organizing an ecological walk to collect all the accumulated dirt.” The ASM then went into action and, with suitable means, cleared the area of even the bulkiest waste, such as an old scooter (but other equally heavy items still remain to be removed, ed.). In just a few weeks, at no cost, this ‘Garden of Eden’ has once again become known and animated, also thanks to social media, where the posts describing the beauty of the place are gathering dozens and dozens of likes. «The Umru association – continues Marroni – also organized a visit which brought together around thirty people, including from outside the region. On Sunday alone I met another hundred. A new walk, once again organized by the CAI, is also scheduled for Thursday 2 May”. What attracts visitors are, moreover, “the tropical atmospheres between river beaches, waterfalls, caves and inlets with a thousand shapes surrounded by rocks covered in moss. The Cervara beach is a real natural swimming pool with shallow water for a few meters and a very weak or almost completely absent current.” Faced with the commitment made by private individuals, however, there is a sore point. «Together with the president of Mi Rifiuto! – explains Marroni – we tried to involve the institutions, in particular the Municipality of Terni, asking for the installation of photo traps on the Santa Maria Maddalena bridge, to prevent waste from becoming king again. However, we are sorry to note that we have not received any response from the competent councilor. Not even a ‘thank you’ for what we did. After decades spent in absolute oblivion, now the time has come to enhance this beautiful stretch of the Nera, also with adequate signage.”
