CREMONA – In 2017 a gang of ‘red gold’ thieves rampaged through the city and province. On the night between 22 and 23 July, in via Castelleone, the medium voltage pylons were severed and 400 meters of copper cables stolen. And again in the city, another theft occurred on the night between 23 and 24 November: 220 meters of copper cables (approximately 1,200 kilograms) and 6,200 euros in damage to Enel.

In the list of raids of red gold, there is the robbery carried out in Castelleone, in the Coste area, on the night between 17 and 18 July: after having severed the medium voltage pylons and deactivated the power switch of the ‘San Latino’ line, 200 meters of cables were stolen; 3,700 euros in damages to Enel.

Not just copper. Seven years ago, some jeans taken away from Unison in Pizzighettone also ended up in the gang’s ‘basket’ (on 20 July) and two vehicles: one stolen from a company in Casanova del Morbasco (on the night between 22 and 23 July), the other from a body shop in the Lodi area, in Zelo Buon Persico (on the night between 12 and on August 13th). On trial there is a Romanian man, 43 years old, domiciled at the time in Caselle Lurani, (Lodi), a fugitive (he is assisted by the lawyer Cristina Pugnoli). He must answer for the aggravated thefts in collaboration with a minor at the time of the events, and with two other compatriots, whose positions have been removed. Enel’s complaints were acquired in the trial documents. Yesterday the victims of the thefts carried out in Pizzighettone and Zelo Buon Persico testified.

The former Unison employee, who was responsible for logistics seven years ago, said she noticed the theft in the morning. “As soon as I entered,” she explained, “I saw the door open and the glass completely broken: the cash register was open, the clothes scattered: I remember this scene above all because of the glass on the floor.” 290 euros disappeared from the cash register. Also missing were 5 pairs of jeans stolen from the part of the warehouse used as a shop for sale on Saturday morning, with a “broken” window overlooking the street. A navigator, a battery charger and a pair of sunglasses had been stolen from one of the vans used for deliveries to the shops, while a key had been stolen from the other.

The owner of the Zelo Buon Persico body shop explained: «The body shop has two gates, the larger one had been broken down, the window was unhinged: 4 personal computers, money from drink vending machines, tyres, bodywork tools, a Renault Megane were stolen.».
How did we get to the fugitive accused? In the documents of the investigation carried out by the Carabinieri, there are wiretaps. At the request of the lawyer Pugnoli, at the hearing on 8 September the expert will be asked to transcribe them.
