“Renovate San Siro? Inter and Milan lack the will”

Interviewed by the newspaper Il Giorno, the regional councilor Gianluca Comazzi criticizes Palazzo Marino for the ‘mess’ that has unnerved Inter and Milan over the San Siro issue, criticizing the renovation project proposed by WeBuild: “The Municipality has wasted a lot of time and has not able to seize the opportunity offered by Milan and Inter to redevelop the entire area. All the Milanese are fond of the Meazza, but we cannot prevent the clubs from carrying out projects to build more modern stadiums. There is the possibility of renovating the current stadium, but it seems to me that Milan and Inter lack the will to do so. I repeat: too much time has been wasted, the Sala Council allowed itself to be influenced by the divisions in the centre-left on the clubs’ project for a new stadium at San Siro. What the mayor is now carrying out on the restyling of the stadium seems to be more of a media attempt than a concrete one.”

Milan and the Municipality of San Donato, meanwhile, have asked the Lombardy Region to initiate the program agreement on the new stadium in San Donato Milanese. At what point is the process?
“By June the regional council will approve the program agreement. I hope that Milan and Inter, if they were to leave San Siro, find an agreement to build a single new stadium”.

Some rumors claim that Milan could involve Inter in the San Donato project. Is it realistic?
“It is neither up to the Region nor me to say whether it is a concrete prospect. I’m just saying that if the two clubs combined their efforts they could benefit.”

In the event of the two teams saying goodbye to San Siro, what should the Municipality do to ensure that the stadium does not turn into a Cathedral in the desert?
“It’s a complicated situation, there’s the risk that San Siro will become an unused open-air museum. I’ve heard of the prospect of using the structure only for concerts, but it seems difficult to pursue. About twenty concerts can be held at San Siro per year, not many more, because it is a stadium without coverage and filling it is not easy for the artists”.
